White Balance - Kenz

White balance is used to make the color in a photograph better and warmer. For example the top photo is not as warm as the bottom one whose white balance was adjusted for. 


On digital cameras, electronic compensation for the color temperature associated with a given set of lighting conditions, ensuring that white light is registered as such on the imaging chip and therefore that the colors in the frame will appear natural. On mechanical, film-based cameras, this function is served by the operator's choice of film stock or with color correction filters. In addition to using white balance to register natural coloration of the image, photographers may employ white balance to aesthetic end, for example white balancing to a blue object in order to obtain a warm color temperature.

Alec Soth - Kenz

Alec Soth is an American photographer notable for "large-scale American projects" featuring the midwestern United States.  His photography has a cinematic feel with elements of folklore that hint at a story behind the image. I chose him because he is from Minneapolis, Minnesota which is where I am from. A quote from him is  "I fell in love with the process of taking pictures, with wandering around finding things. To me it feels like a kind of performance. The picture is a document of that performance." I chose this picture because it reminds me of northern Minnesota in the winter time.

The pictures above are taken with different ISO's. The picture on the left has a lower ISO and the picture on the right has a higher ISO. A lower ISO makes a picture darker because it is less sensitive to light. A higher ISO gives more light but it can make a picture grainy when you increase it's size.

Flower in the Sky - Kenz

I took this picture in the gardens by the Guarini Campus. There was this single flower hanging off a tree so I went under it and took a picture of it from the ground looking up into the sky. I love how this picture turned out with the sky background. I used an ISO setting of 800 and an aperture 5.6 and a shutter speed of 1/200.

The Villa Borghese Hand - Kenz

This was the picture I took at the Villa Borghese gardens. It is overexposed on the right side of the photo but I somewhat like that because it makes the picture limitless and not constrained in a border. I used an ISO setting of 400 and a shutter speed of 1/250 with an aperture of 8.0 because it was very bright light.

Telephoto lens - Kenz

I took this the last day in class with a telephoto lens and a fast shutter speed of 1/1250 in order to capture the bee quickly before it flew away. I like how the small depth of field makes the main object stand out and the background out of focus.

Lee Frienlander - Kenz

Lee Friedlander is an American photographer and artist. In the 1960s and 70s, working primarily with 35mm cameras and black and white film, Friedlander evolved an influential and often imitated visual language of urban "social landscape," with many of the photographs including fragments of store-front reflections, structures framed by fences, posters and street-signs. The picture above is a typical photograph by him due to the lines he creates using buildings, street signs, and bridges. 

Removing objects from photos - Kenz

By using hitting "s" in photoshop you can alter the objects in the photograph by removing or blurring out objects.  For example: take some color from the sky and put it in a different part of the photo, hit alt to define your field.

Depth of Field - Kenz

I took this picture in Prague at the John Lennon wall and with a telephoto lens I zoomed in on the wall which created the background to be slightly blurry. Therefore this picture has a small depth of field.  I really like the lines in this photo and how your eyes are taken back into the picture along the wall. 

Alex Majoli - Kenz

This picture was taken by Alex Majoli, an Italian photographer from Ravenna, Italy. He claims that ""I really don't have any idea about photography, but I take pictures." His style or characteristic picture is like the one above where it is a black and white photograph and often overexposed to create a sharp contrast in the subject. 

gelato jenna - Peter van Agtmael

I'm not sure why but I really like this picture. I think it's because it is taken from an out of the ordinary viewpoint. It's almost from a child's perspective. It also looks like it was taken with maybe a wide angle lens  because some of the picture looks distorted. I also am very curious as to what the story behind this picture is. I get a sense that it is probably in Iraq and has to do with soldiers, but there's so much more than is unknown and I like that.

I took this picture when we were at the park by the Guirini campus. I had my shutter open all the way and my shutter was really fast to compensate for all the light entering the lens. I really like the color of this flower. I have never seen a blue flower and when I saw it I could not believe it so I took a picture.

I took this picture in Barcelona, Spain right before it started pouring outside. It was originally very dark and gloomy looking outside but to make this effect even more dramatic I sped up my shutter speed a couple stops to make the picture underexposed which made it look darker. I like the eerie mood that it gave this picture. The storm was awesome too by the way!

step 1: click on "new adjustment layer"

step 2: select "photo filter" from the list

step 3: select the color you want to tint your image with from teh filter present list of colors, or choose a color from the color picker by clicking on the "color" color swatch

step 4: you can then increase or decrease the amount of color added by dragging the density slider right or left

gelato Jenna - David Alan Harvey

This picture was taken in Brazil by David Alan Harvey. I really like how the picture has a blue tint to it. It gives it a very cool temperature. I also like how you can see the ladies dress blowing in the wind so you can sense the breeze.

This photo was taken on our on sight day for class in the park. Pink is my favorite color so when I saw pink flowers I started taking multiple pictures and this one is my favorite.

This picture was taken at the John Lennon wall in Prague. This phrase almost immediately caught my eye not only because it is written in white (helping it stand out on a wall full of colored graffiti) but also because I like and have heard this phrase before.

This picture was taken at the Prague Castle, I chose to emphasize on the golden gate with the stained glass window in the background because I liked the gate in the foreground to show the details and the window in the background to capture the colors but not let it be the main focus.
