The more the number on the diaphragm decreases, the more its opening increases, and so the depth of field gets narrow. The more the number on the diaphragm increases, the more its opening decreases, and the depth of field gets wide. In fact, a small diaphragm increases the depth of field, and a large diaphragm decreases it.
